South African Boerboel
“He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.”

My Boerboel Puppy
I purchased "Island Zahlman" from a breeder on December 30, 2009 in Oak Harbor, WA on Whidbey Island. Zahlman was diagnosed with Severe Subaortic Stenosis (SAS) on April 7th, 2010. He was 5 months old.
SAS is a genetic defect.
Genetic defects can arise from inbreeding.
Zahlman's Mother & Father were cousins.
I do not believe any heart tests were completed on either the Sire or the Dam. After further investigation, I have found that Zahlman's Father, Bode, has HD....mild unilateral left hip dysplasia. One website claims that his elbows are clear, however it does not mention that he has hd. Also that site claims that he is a proven producer, that website does not tell you about the genetic problems that have arisen in the litter that he produced.
More and more, I believe that it is important for a buyer to research and do more research...ask for results of tests, check hd records, and research the lineage of the dogs. Check with people that have purchased pups in the past from your breeder.
Both parents are registered with the SABT.
Just because a dog is registered does not mean that the breeder has taken all necessary steps in order to provide you with a healthy pup.
Breeders that are conscientious will perform necessary tests prior to mating their dogs. They will want to improve the breed. They do not want to sell a pup that is not healthy, or has a genetic defect. Their concern is for the well-being of the pups they produce.
